Most of a lowering install is ordinary hand tools. The exceptions are the parts held under spring pressure or pressed into place, and those want the correct tool rather than improvisation.
A spring compressor rated for the spring you are working on is not optional. A coil spring stores enough energy to kill someone, and a borrowed compressor that is not rated for it is the most dangerous object in the job.
